Since l moved into my house 3 years ago we keep getting fines from various authorities for speeding, parking, running red lights, hit and run and failing to stop at scene (fortunately no injuries).

All these are vehicles that do not belong to us but are registered illegally to our house. New vehicles are being registered all the time but we do not get log books or car tax reminders - only the fines. How is that possible???

l have contacted the police, our local counciller, DVLA (who were a joke), the post office, watch dog and nobody seems to be able to help. l have been told on most occassions to return fines to sender with an explanation and not worry - which l have done but these mostly get ignored and are followed by court summons, bailiffs letters etc. Its very frustrating and l do not want bailiffs knocking on my door, never mind the fact that these people are driving dangerously round the country. What happens when they hit and run and kill somebody?

only thing I can suggest is to keep a copy of every letter you return with the dates that you return it. Every time you phone somebody about this make a note of it. when bailiffs do turn up show them the copies and the notes along with your ID to prove youre not the vehicle owner or the recipient of the unpaid fines. Then sue the issuing authority for sending the bailiffs round

Do any of the names match previous occupants or did these letters just start appearing?
I received numerous demand for previous occupants of my address. Simply returning to sender marked either 'not known' or 'no longer at this address' did the trick eventually but I did have to fend off a pair of baillifs one day.
If u do get debt collectors/baillifs at the door do not let them in under any circumstances but keep some form of photo ID & a copy of ur mortgage deeds or tenency agreement handy to prove who u r & get them off ur doorstep.
Citizens Advice Bereau r pretty useful too.

I think this problem must be more common than I thought! Until a couple of years ago, I worked in the HR Dept of a large International retail company & we had hundreds of stores around the UK. A couple of our store managers in the London area started to receive such notices for vehicles illegally registered at the stores' addresses. I requested that they be sent to me & although it took a number of letters, it did eventually stop. I returned the notices to the senders, with an appropriately worded (typed) letter, & sent copies of everything to the DVLA, together with another letter requesting that our addresses be removed from their records relating to those particular vehicles. It may be that because we were a large, well-known company, rather than private individuals, they felt more inclined to act, but u should be accorded the same standard of service. I know the government has brought about measures to stop these illegal registrations, but that is no help to u at the moment. If u continue to receive notices having completed the above steps, I would take the other advice you've received & return to sender, stating 'Unknown at this Address'.

Ouch, awkward situation. I was going to suggest u speak to the DVLA, but they seem to have been unhelpful thus far. Might it be worth speaking to them again, but instead of talking to the call-centre twit, ask to speak to their manager.

I am sure you've thought of this, but do the fines contain any details as to where/when the offences have occurred & the number plates? If so, then try speaking to the local police force & explain the situation to them; likewise, take it as far up the heirarchy as it will go, u want to speak to organ grinders, not monkeys.

'Not known at this address' may be the only thing u can do until these fraudsters r caught. Do not open the letters, this will make it look more as if you're avoiding ur own fine.

Presumably the log books etc r going somewhere; u need to find out where - the only way to do this will be, sorry, through the DVLA. You may need to send them repeated snotty letters before u get aywhere, but u ought to persevere.

You will need to be assertive if u want to get this sorted out, not only r these idiots illegally endangering our roads, but also illegally avoiding the consequences. Whatever they're doing, it is NOT ur responsibility & u should not have to worry about it.

Good luck!

How can I resolve vehicles registered illegally at my address

This happened to my Grandad (who is 80 years old and never owned a car in his life)
He got reminders of unpaid car tax, i rang DVLA who were not really bothered. His second letter arrived last month and I marked the envelope 'not known at this address' (as told by DVLA) so far no other letters have arrived. How many people must this happen to?! Im interested in too..thanks

I think what u describe is a clear case of fraud, & u r quite right to be very concerned of the implications. I think that unfortunately u r going to have to just keep taking the mail to the Police (keep a photocopy for ur own records) & it is always worthwhile calling the sender to inform them that no such car has ever been registered by the home owners/residents of ur address.

The Police r supposed to log those types of mail into the system - I certainly know of one person who was getting mail for someone else which involved fraud & the people were traced.

It may be worth u getting an experion credit check - unfortunately those tickets that r not paid will be attributed not to you, but may be linked to ur address & affect ur credit rating. I hope u manage to get it sorted out sooner rather than later.

As long as they are not registered in your NAME, you've got nothing to worry about.
Do as you've been told, return to sender with an explanation.
